Space Culturalisation

Contemporary cosmology is founded on a positivist thought in which society's technology determines the development of its social structure and cultural values. These deterministic positions are challenged with the recognition that technology and culture are not neutral, but a product of established knowledge. Space exploration has its inclination to life sciences, engineering and industrialisation, while from societal perspective we can recognise an urgency to research human space efforts also as a cultural practice.

Selected exhibitions: Supre:architecture, Herman Potočnik Noordung Memorial Centre (2006), Gagarin (2011), 100th monumental influences / Herman Potočnik Noordung (2012), Orbital oscillation::120 (2012), Voyager/dr. Mavretič (2013), Dwelling: Orbit (2014), 14th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice (2014), Spectral Modulator of Edvard Zajec (2014), Matters of gravity (2014), Space Sight/ Icons of Non-Visible (2015), Space Sight/ Lenses (2016), KOSMICA Parliament (2018), Supre:organism (2019), More-than-Planet (2022), Planetary Public Stack (2023).

Out of the Cradle

Out of the Cradle is the joint ground for the different communities involved into methodological and practical research of the human position in outer space to intersect.
Space agencies already invest in delivering benefits to the citizens and humankind by exploring the deepest realms of the Universe, the foundations of our physicality and augmentations of everyday surroundings. What existing space activities fundamentally lack is understanding humanness of being in outer space.
With Out of the Cradle (OotC) we aim to contribute human-centred perspectives into outer space utilisation. We are developing a composite interfaces between established domains, composite missions to advocate non-established human and social studies beyond Earth’s atmosphere and showcase human space activities as a cultural and not only technological venture.

Locations: Vitanje (2013), Ljubljana (2014), St.Petersburg (2014), Moscow (2015), Vitanje (2015), Amsterdam (2018), Noordwijk (2018), Edinburgh (2019)

Space Sight

“How is the non-visible visible?” is the question getting its form in the collaboration with experts from the natural sciences, humanities, arts and education, by highlighting certain cases in the framework of exhibitions, expert conventions and courses. What is the influence of space research and exploration on culture, in order to open the way for epistemological reflections of images of the non-visible?

Projects: Space Sight/ Icons of Non-Visible (2015), Space Sight at Medium, Space Sight/ Lenses (2016), Sentinel Citizen (2019-20), Space Sight at AKV/St.Joost (2018-23).

Herman Potočnik Noordung Memorial Centre

Miha Turšič & Dragan Živadinov
The Herman Potočnik Noordung Memorial Centre in Vitanje was a one-artefact-museum – Herman Potočnik Noordung's book The Problem of Space Travel (1929). The memorial room slightly resembled the interior of a space observatory. Due to lack of physical memorabilia about his life, the interior of an observatory capsule presented videos with statements of renowned historians, cosmonauts and astronauts for instance: Tatjana Nikolajevna Zhelnina, Pavel Klushantsev, Jurij Baturin, Roger Launius, Frederick I. Ordway III, and sir Arthur C. Clarke.

Operational between 2006 and 2015.
